The Groundbreaking Hydrogen-Powered Hydrofoil Chase Boat from Luna Rossa Unveiled for the 37th America's Cup
Hydrogen-Powered Revolution on the High Seas
In a significant technological breakthrough, a high-speed hydrogen-powered catamaran has sailed into the ocean, set to provide support for the Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli Team at the forthcoming 37th America's Cup. This remarkable achievement is the combined effort of VPLP, Persico Marine, HPE Group, and Genevos.
One highlight of the 37th America's Cup is the support vessels trailing behind the AC75 within the competition area. In this edition, these support vessels are hydrogen-fuelled hydrofoil catamarans, or HSVs (Hydrogen Support Vessels). The Luna Rossa team had the option to purchase a "turnkey" yacht from the Emirates Team New Zealand or design and build their yacht internally. They opted for the latter to maintain control over the entire competition process while acquiring new skills in a critical area of future transport.

High-Speed Hydrofoil Catamaran Powered by Hydrogen
"Our team viewed the HSV as a significant and complex challenge," says Umberto De Luca, Project Head for Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli. The realm of civilian hydrogen-powered propulsion remains largely unexplored, with limited technologies to reference. This resulted in the designing and developing of a highly advanced boat in every aspect, most importantly, equipped with such an innovative engine. This revolutionary hydrogen-powered catamaran represented a massive team effort and will serve as a valuable reference point for future projects."
Designed in collaboration with the French VPLP shipbuilding engineering design company, the boat embodies the signature style of the Italian challenger team. Built by Persico Marine, the HSV carbon fiber catamaran features the same cutting-edge hydrofoil technology and metallic coating as the AC75. It also leverages HPE Group's battery expertise and Genevos' fuel cell proficiency.
The boat is fitted with two custom 40 KWh batteries, charged by two 80 KW fuel cells.
