Italy's Hydrocell Unveils First Hydrogen-Powered Boat

Italy-based company, Hydrocell, is the forefront of developing the first Italian vessel featuring certified hydrogen fuel propulsion system. The company headquartered in Bolzano, is currently in advanced stages of converting the "Nobody’s Perfect" fishing boat from diesel power to hydrogen power.

Key Project ComponentsThe crucial components for new venture have been selected and are currently undergoing rigorous testing in Venice. Simultaneously, the Hydrocell team is dedicated to developing the "HYMAR Control" unit that will serve as the core component of their propulsion system.

Showcase Events

This ambitious project will be showcased at two prominent industry expos in Italy - firstly at H2Expo held in Piacenza from September 11th to 13th and then at Salone Nautico di Puglia scheduled from October 10th to 14th in Brindisi.

Transformation Journey

The "Nobody’s Perfect," originally built as a 17-meter-long fishing boat back in Bordeaux during 1978, will now house its first-ever hydrogen fuel engine managed by Hydrocell's control unit. This transformative initiative has received backing from founding partners aiming for its maiden voyage from Venice during Yachting Festival 2025.

Environmental Commitment

Hydrocell emphasizes advancing hydrogen-based propulsion technology with a focus on clean navigation practices, noise reduction capabilities, and eco-friendly solutions for marine operations.

CEO Karl Manfredi expressed his optimism about their progress stating,

"Our project timeline remains on track as we anticipate transitioning our propulsion systems from diesel to hydrogen this winter followed by land-based functionality tests before conducting water trials within Venice Lagoon."

He further added,

"Our objective is set on unveiling this revolutionary hydrogen-powered vessel at next year's May edition of Venice International Boat Show."

Hydrocell was founded by three visionary entrepreneurs - CEO Karl Manfredi brings expertise spanning management, telecommunications, IT & cloud computing; President Federico Giudiceandrea holds an electronic engineering background having co-founded TTControl along with owning Microtec & Classic Boats Venice; CTO Walter Huber boasts chemical engineering credentials being recognized as an esteemed expert within Bolzano IIT's Hydrogen Center.

In recognition of their pioneering efforts towards maritime innovation using green technologies,

In 2023, they clinched top honors under 'Application Innovation' category at Italy's Hydrogen Technology Awards (IHTA).

In March this year (2024), they secured third place under Water Mobility segment during IoMOBILITY awards ceremony.
