100-Hour / Annual Service Checklist
The Honda BF9 is an owner-friendly engine that rewards simple, consistent maintenance. Most service tasks require only basic hand tools and can be completed in under an hour, making DIY service practical even for first-time outboard owners.
- Change the engine oil (drain and refill with 0.6 L SAE 10W-30); this model has no oil filter.
- Inspect and replace both spark plugs; check electrode condition and gap.
- Inspect and replace the water pump impeller and gaskets.
- Drain and refill lower unit gear oil; inspect for water contamination.
- Clean or replace the fuel filter and inspect the fuel line for cracks.
- Check the anode (zinc) and replace if more than 50% eroded.
- Inspect the propeller for damage and verify the shear pin is intact.
- Lubricate all pivot points, throttle linkage, and steering friction surfaces.
- Inspect the recoil starter rope for fraying (manual-start models).
- Test the emergency stop switch (lanyard kill switch) for proper function.
Pro Tips:
- Add fuel stabilizer to the tank and run the engine for several minutes before any storage period exceeding 30 days. This circulates treated fuel through the carburetor and prevents varnish buildup that causes hard starting.
- After each saltwater outing, flush the engine using the built-in flushing port or by running it in a freshwater barrel. Even brief saltwater exposure leaves corrosive deposits inside the cooling passages.
