Palmer Johnson Yachts: Sinking into Everlasting Honor
In a remarkable move towards marine conservation, the non-profit Marine Cleanup Initiative in collaboration with Palmer Johnson Yachts, recently sailed a motoryacht named 'Team' off the shores of Hutchinson Island, Florida. This vessel, constructed in the 1980s, was deliberately sunk to the ocean floor to create a unique artificial reef. The hope is that within 50 years, the steel and aluminium structure of this luxury yacht will be completely transformed into a thriving marine ecosystem.

Creating Nature's Grandeur: Artificial Reef Formation
The Marine Cleanup Initiative, along with McCulley Marine Services and the St. Lucie County Artificial Fish Reef Program, deployed the vessel on July 15, 2023, as an artificial fish reef. It now rests 160 feet underwater, destined to become the A.A. Hendry Artificial Reef.
The non-profit organization, led by Christa Stone, hopes that spores from Gorgonian or Ivory Bush Corals will begin to accumulate around the 264-ton stainless steel and aluminium hull of the 1987 'Team' yacht. Divers from the organization will be monitoring the coral growth closely, expecting to see the vessel adorned with Gorgonian coral in half a century, giving Palmer Johnson Yachts a truly eternal honor.

Beneath the Waves: Building Homes for Marine Life
Under the guidance of 'Marine cleanup initiative', artificial marine habitats are being created to provide young fish and other aquatic creatures places to rest, grow, and proliferate. The initiative aims to increase marine biodiversity, ensure healthy water bodies, and bring damaged marine ecosystems back to life, such as those destroyed by human activities.
A shining example of this initiative is turning a 260-ton super-yacht from Palmer Johnson Yachts into an underwater habitat. Coral polyps will soon be clinging to this submerged vessel, growing into colonies, and providing a rich ecosystem for marine creatures.

Restoration of Coral Reefs: A Dual Approach
The non-profit organization recognizes that human activities and natural factors have damaged many coral reefs, causing adverse effects on the ocean and its resources. To repair some of this damage, two key strategies are being employed - coral transplantation and the creation of artificial structures. With nine deployments completed so far, each deployment aims to create feeding sites rich in plankton, draw in smaller marine creatures, and boost marine life.
